A WINE CELLAR IN MARSANNAY

2022: A YEAR OF CREATIVITY FOR 26 WINEMAKERS

Following a process of collective reflection, we opened a winegrowers' cellar in Marsannay-la-Côte on July 13, 2022. The new generation, young and dynamic, is building on the values of their elders to win over lovers of great Burgundy wines.  What was missing was a convivial place to share this common passion. The idea of creating a caveau became an obvious one. This impetus from 26 winemakers will give Burgundians and visitors to our beautiful Burgundy the opportunity to discover or rediscover over 100 wines in a single location.

A LITTLE HISTORY...

Our heritage

In the 17th century, Marsannay wines were sold alongside those from Dijon at a much higher price than those from neighboring communes. Clos du Roy and Clos du Chapitre were among the rare wines served at the tables of Louis XIV and Louis XVI, and were already being exported around the world.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Dijon's population doubled and wine consumption became more democratic among city dwellers. Winegrowers took advantage of this opportunity to replant Gamay and Aligoté. These were the most prosperous times for our villages.

With the arrival of the railroads, inexpensive wines from the south of France compete with Marsannay wines for Dijon consumers.

Restoring the Marsannay appellation to its former glory

The 20th Century

To counter this competition, in 1919 the idea was born of creating an original wine: Le Rosé de Marsannay. This ingenious creation of Marsannay rosé not only enabled the winegrowers to overcome the crisis of the 1930s, but also to renew their success with consumers.

In 1935, the lNAO was created. At that time, Marsannay was insufficiently planted with Pinot grape variety, and only benefited from the "Bourgogne" appellation.  From then on, it was obvious that the "Gamay" grape variety should be uprooted.

In 1960, 90% of the Marsannay finage was replanted with Pinot and Chardonnay.

In 1987, Marsannay was awarded the "village" appellation for its red, white and rosé wines. Today, this recognition is still unique in Burgundy.

L' Avenir

On 4 July 2015, the Climats du vignoble de Bourgogne were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Our predecessors had already identified the potential of our vines. Terroir does not vanish into thin air, and what was true several centuries ago is just as true today.
